Clawd Jesa. Why does this nearly 80-year-old, embarassing bachelor want to be a father again?
Hugh Hefner is pushing 80, and he's sired four children - one of whom, Christie, runs Playboy Enterprises - but he sounds ready to spawn again.
"Holly and I have talked about that," Hef told me yesterday as he held forth in his trademark red velvet smoking jacket in a bedroom at the Peninsula Hotel. "I wouldn't reject it out of hand. I certainly think it's possible."
As for grownups David and Christie, from Hef's first marriage, and teenagers Marston and Cooper, from his second, they won't be consulted.
"It's not a committee decision," Hef said.
Holly is
25-year-old Holly Madison, the first among equals of Hef's three very blond girlfriends - who are stark naked, soaped up and, in one photo, administering playful licks in the shower in a foamy pictorial for Playboy's November issue (which Hef and the threesome will autograph today at the Virgin Megastore Times Square).
"I didn't entirely see it coming," Hef mused about Ms. Madison. "She's been with me now for a little over four years. I think this is probably for the rest of my life. This is serious."
Hef's pneumatic companions - besides Holly, there's Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson - are the stars of "The Girls Next Door," E!'s popular reality show about life in the Playboy Mansion, seen through the eyes of his girlfriends.
"It's exactly the same as being the girlfriend of any other caring guy," Hef explains. "This relationship is not unique, other than the fact that there are three instead of one."
Other than that!
But it looks like Bridget and Kendra - who, as Hef and I chatted, were in a nearby room, daintily eating pizza while Holly watched - are term-limited.
Gone are the days when Hef could handle seven girlfriends at once.
"I am slowing down - in my fashion," Hef said.
Baby, maybe. But marriage, never.
"Not because I don't care enough for her, but because I don't want to spoil the relationship," said Hef, who turns
80 on April 9.
Why would marriage spoil things?
"Why indeed? I don't know why. It has in the past. ... Holly made a comment once that in her dream, that five years from now it might be just the two of us. I think that's a real possibility."
