Is it worth it?
Definitely.
I waited one semester to see how things went, knowing all the while I would likely join. I'm going to speak specific to Sigma Chi(EX), just because it's easier to write a million times.
EX has surrounded me with guys who, proverbially speaking, know the ropes, the classes to take, the teachers to try, the places to eat, the girls to sleep with (just joking on that one). EX provides opportunities that you would only get otherwise if you're in Student Government, or something of that nature, because it provides you with leadership opportunities, gives you responsibilities that parallel those you might have in life, making you better prepared to handle any challenge. But beyond SGA, EX has those times where you sit around and talk about shit that has been collecting in the depths or your soul, the shit you need to get out to rid yourself of internal, self-imposed oppression. EX doesn't buy your friends, it provides a stable money source that the group can do things together no group of friends could ever do otherwise. EX is like a magic box for us, really. You put in just a little something, and you get so much more out of it. That's why many of us here put into our GLO's, because every GLO is like that, and we all really get a lot out of it.
Of course many of my friends didn't go greek, and I never see many of them. Not because I'm not making an effort or because I'm all into EX, just simply because compared to how much I and other greeks do on campus, and how we seem to always be doing something to advance either the college, the town, the fraternity, or ourselves, thus always being on campus, that they are comparatively never on campus, never doing anything, but working to fill time.
Every GLO is like this. So, don't keep it specific to EX. I could give a million reasons to go greek, and honestly cannot think of a single reason not to, except that it doesn't fit some peoples personalities. But for those that do say it's buying your friends, at a couple hundred dollars for a couple thousand really good friends, that's not a bad buy! hehe
