I believe that a lot of non-Greeks don't realize that those symbols have significance, especially national significance, and that they could potentially identify a group. Alexandra Robbins was different only because she studied sororities for a more in-depth period and thus realized what could be identifying features. The average "fake rushee" probably hasn't done that much research.
Then again, I thought that at least one of the groups in Pledged was pretty obvious, but I may be jumping to conclusions.
