I see what you're saying -- in reality, I don't think the mods would normally take action on a post, even if it is offensive, if nobody reports it. I don't think they can be expected to read every post of every thread, which is why I think the reporting thing is an issue. If I recall correctly, the recent deleted posts were reported by multiple people, which makes it more likely that a mod would see the posts in question.
