I don't like spiders either. I have a garden level apartment so they've been pretty plentiful. I bought some hedge apples the other week at the Farmer's Market and put them in a few different rooms and I haven't seen a spider since.
My old roommate and I found what she thought was a wolf spider in our old apartment last year. She bought some spider-killer spray and sprayed the crap out of it.
