Brandon,
As others have said go through rush, but it seems to me you are a little too caught up with reputation and the national organization. The one thing I think you need to realize is that chapters vary from campus to campus and the reputation at each is always changing. I got bids and had friends interested in rushing me at all the BIG name frats at UC Berkeley. But I chose a mid tier fraternity on the rise who had the type of people I knew I could be lifetime friends and brothers with. I felt the people were most important and what they stood for. Not only are we the most diverse house on campus with one of the largest pledge classes last semester. We also are the only fratnerity to have created our own national philanthropy PUSH America which rasies money and awareness for the Handicaped. Join somewhere you think that you can contribute also. I want add to the tradition of Gamma Chapter - Pi Kappa Phi's longest continous running chapter, so the semester after pledging I am taking on the responsiblity of Co-social chair. Which is actually pretty stressful cause PiKapp's love to Party. I hope this advice was helpful and like the others said go through rush it's the only way to know which is right for you.
