But these rich people look like they are trying to make themselves feel like heroes and saviors in some far-off country. Sounds like an ego trip for them.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about it. On one had, it's good that the tour group is helping out the people and that a reputable organization is affiliated with the tour. On the other hand, it's tacky to have a tour of poverty so one can have an ego booster.
At the end of the day, they're helping people out.
