Honestly, the only thing that article made me think was- There is a difference between TV and real life... No one ever claimed that they are representative of each other. I can tell the difference, can't everyone else?

What am I missing? I just don't understand the point of comparing sitcoms to Hurricane Katrina. Apples and oranges as far as I can tell.
True.

TV isn't real. Even "Reality TV." Or maybe especially Reality TV.

News reports what it sees. Entertainment programming doesn't report anything.

I'll bet that this reporter or crittic or whatever doesn't remember the sixties and the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement. Without TV coverage of marches and riots and rallys, it would have taken a lot longer to catch the nations attention.

"In short: TV is aspirational, not representational. is basically a reiteration of something former FCC Commissioner Lee Loevenger said many years ago in what was called his "Reflective, Projective Theory" which we all had to study in media classes. Basically, it said that although they realized TV wasn't real, it showed people in beautiful clothes living in beautiful houses with beautiful kids, and the people who watched it tried to project themselves into that image. Not much has really changed along those lines.
