I'm not a social chair, but I can tell you what, at least to me, makes a good social event/mixer:

Quality of people - the crowd makes a huge difference. If it's a fun crowd that isn't going to do anything stupid, that came to party, and that's going to be social and make an effort to talk to most of the people there, that makes a huge difference. In mixers, this would mean a sorority that came to have fun, that doesn't act like they're just being forced to go, and one that will party long into the night/early morning.

Themes can be part of this too - anything that makes the party/mixer/social event a little different can't be a bad thing, and if it works you can try doing it again.

Attendance is huge - if you're not getting many people to come, or if you're not getting people from your own chapter to show up, that's just a recipe for disaster.

As far as my favorite - I'll stick with mixers on this one, the best ones we've had were one with Alpha Delta Pi this past weekend, and our "Wedding Mixer" with Alpha Phi (a sister of Alpha Phi and a brother from Kappa Sig are 'married' to each other in a ceremony where both are made fun of - usually the two have had a history)
