if your friend is a professional...

A good buddy of mine/former soccer coach did it in the most amazing fashion that I've ever seen, or heard. He used her occupation as a lead in, and simply blew her away. The players in this story are Peter Trzop and Christa.

Here it goes...

Christa receives a phone call from the My Old Kentucky Home Historical Department (the foundation of our state song, and the positive well-known image of Ky, very historical) reporting to her as she is the lead reporter at my local newspaper, that an old chest has just been discovered in the depths of a basement vault, and they want her there for the opening of it to write an article about the event and want her photographer there to snap shots of it, in fact they wanted her to be the one to open it as she's given years of dedicated service to the city, this was how the city was paying her back. So she rings my buddy Trzop, her lover and tells him to get his ass to OKH and that she'll meet him there, she's got a surprise for him, when he gets there, she's telling him about what she gets to do..so, so excited.
The department shows her the box, a few city officials are there to observe this mysterious find with her, as well as some of the department, they have to forcefully open the chest, and she rumages about it for a bit, finding some very old artifacts, and all the while not noticing that Trzop is moving in beside her, stealthily. At the bottom of the chest she finds another very, very old box, which, naturally, she opens. By this time Trzop is on his knee beside her, but she's so involved in what is happening that she doesn't even realize it..until she, upon opening the box, discovers that there is a gorgeous, modern diamond ring. As she turns to display the ring to the onlookers, she finds Trzop beside her on bended knee, grabbing her back in one hand, and the hand holding the ring in the other, and asks Christa to marry him in front of the town officials, as her photographer is snapping shots of the unfolding events. It was the most creative, amazing engagement proposal ever.

Another good one is my chapter consul at Sigma Chi. He and his girlfriend, two incredibly intelligent people, read to one another on a weekly basis, they go sit in the park which is near-by and alternate turns reading passages from books aloud. Players: Gene and Beth. ~
Beth is reading from from a book that is dealing with a man and a woman in love, when Gene decides that it is his turn, that Beth has been reading long enough and should be able to rest a bit and just listen, Beth agrees. Gene proceeds to read perhaps 20 or so pages when the story begins to become confusing. No longer about Mr. X and Ms. Y, the story seems to parralel better than ever that of her and Gene. Focusing stronger than earlier, the story seems to be getting really deep and heartfelt, until Beth even begins to cry, thinking how much this story is like their love for one another, and all of a sudden not only is the story no longer about Mr. X and Ms. Y, but the names have even changed to Gene and Beth, in the course of the reading, Gene describes how this woman, Beth, means everything and infinitely more, then from reading from the book, as if it's just the story, even still, Gene asks Beth to marry him. At which point I believe he was tackled by an emotional, crying, joyous Beth, greeted with Kisses and "Yes." The whole transition took place in about a page and a half, and ironically fed really well off the last few words he'd used from the book so that one that wasn't paying attention might perhaps not even notice it, but they read enough together to know how attentive each other was during the reading. The passage he read was tightly glued onto the page so that it didn't stick out to her when she had the book, but he also didn't want her to notice him stick it in as he began reading. Another Brilliant proposal, but Lord, I cannot get a girlfriend, and all my peers are marrying off! What a sad state of affairs.
