Not always. Alot of chapters/colonies require additional stuff like that during the pledge period... but look the other way when members to follow it. This also opens the cage to making pledges to special activities such as community service, often there own seperate activity from the chapter/colony.

I actually agree with you on this point. Some organizations or chapters may require new members to fulfill a certain amount of service hours. If a new member does not want to do so, is that hazing or is that person simply not fulfilling the promise?
Some people think wearing pledge pins almost 24/7 is hazing, but if you KNOW that is a national component of the process (or EVEN a chapter component) either bow out gracefully or get with the program. Worse things have been requested of pledges than SOME of the things highlighted in this thread.
