Yes, I am protective of my letters/symbols. My orgs. protocol manual demands that I be. We go so far as to say when and where we can and cannot wear them. But there is nothing in there about non-members not touching them or not using an insignia cup, pen, etc.
Another reason is that BGLOs have a big problem with perps. Because items are so attainable (which is why our licensed vendors cannot sell our items over the internet, and all of their merchandise must be pre-approved--but alas that doesn't stop the unlicensed sellers) it is too easy for someone to pretend to be what they aren't.
Lastly, in the BGLO a frat member would not be caught wearing a sorority shirt and vice-versa (except for Sweethearts and that's a whole 'nother discussion, since Sweetheart groups are outlawed by all the NPHC, except the Iotas.)
By the way what are party shirts?
