Now, I'm not saying I'm all-knowing but the way I understand it from everything I've read/seen, there's more to it than that.
First, you have the price per barrel (crude) that's been rising like crazy. I believe it stabilized a bit recently though.
Second, you have oil refineries in the U.S. that are working at capacity or being so overwhelmed that they shut down altogether temporarily.
Third, the reason that the refineries are so swamped is because environmental groups are blocking the construction of new refineries or even expansions of old ones. These groups are always pushing for alternative fuel sources - which would be great of course but it's so expensive - and with the majority of cars running on gasoline right now, it's a hard sell to fund the research.
It's a huge nasty circle. And, all the police action/battle/war mess has not helped things.
