I absolutely hate when people pull this shit. Hon, you are clearly an intelligent girl because you're able to see through his bullsh*t enough to question it. This guy is trying to keep you interested enough so that you don't move on and (gasp!) have a life without him. He's playing games with you to keep you on the backburner.
