I'm not too sure about the element of surprise. You might end up with some really
u-g-l-y (you ain't got no alibi) facial expressions. I definately prefer taking pictures of people when they don't know it's happening. That way, they don't have a chance to tense up or make those grimacing "smiles". I have taken posed pictures of this one guy many times and everytime he thinks he's smiling it always looks like a sneer.
