There are fraternities in Germany, just not Greek letter ones.
They are called "duelling clubs" because in the old days, yes, indeed, they did duelling or fencing. It was considered an honorable thing to have some scars on your face as a result of these duelling matches. I even visited a fraternity house in Heidelberg.

Maybe they aren't quite the same thing as we have in America, but it is a FRATERNAL organization, nevertheless.
