The greek houses at Michigan are so old and have been around so long, way before the universities were a big sanctioning part of greek life. Some of them are far off campus as well, miles off campus, so they really are away from the university. Ann Arbor itself has rules protecting some of the houses since they are historical buildings.
I have a hard time believing this just because of some of the guys I know who are still active in SAE at Michigan and some of the guys who graduated with me. I'd be so seriously disapointed if this was true because they have always presented themselves as all-round great guys.
