Those of us who deal with frigid winters realize that we rarely get big snow storms when it's really really cold (below 20 F or so). The really big snow storms happen here when it's close to freezing. Ice also occurs near freezing. When it's super cold, it's a dry powdery snow. Therefore, this could make sense that the storms are worse and more icy now that it's slightly warmer.
