Just so you all know, there is an option on facebook where your profile (including friends list) cannot be accessible to anyone except your current friends. This way, even if a PNM was to do a search for a Pi Chi, all she would get was the intial page that listed name, major, and year. Have them do this and remove their affiliation and club membership and your golden.

Yep there's a function, where you can hide your friend list, group list, basically the whole profile just leaving your name, major, year still on it. If you want to go all out, just change your privacy viewing settings so that only alums, staff, or faculty can see your profile. A fulltime/parttime student wouldn't be able to see your profile, the only thing they'll see is just your name search results but won't be able to click on your name. =)
So I don't see what's the fuss about deactivating your account. The only thing I've heard that's been a problem is that there's a couple of crack/pothead groups like "i smoke pot & trip on acid daily" (it's not called that, but it's there's silly variation of that here) where more than half of the members are in sororities and fraternities. And pictures in some profiles are a second problem...
Ever wonder why there's a lil blurred out spot in some people's FB pic...lmao...and to counteract all that, there's a group called something like "i can't be part of any drinking groups coz it's bad press" =p
