I don't think it's a "cheap seat" promotion problem. The guy at the Red Sox game was a season ticket holder, and if I remember correctly the KC Royals incident was two people who had close seats right along the first base line.
There have been a number of similar incidents in the past:
- At the Yankees/Sox games in the 70s, people used to throw food, beer bottles and other objects at the players.
- In another mid 70's game, two fans attempted to burn a flag on the field in LA, with outfielder Rick Monday having to step in to end the situation.
- In a New York/Seattle playoff game in 95, someone hit outfield Gerald Williams with a battery.
This isn't something new, I just think it's getting more attention than in the past.
