A few years ago, I had the opportunity to attend a free scotch tasting run by Johnnie Walker. Very interesting. We tasted a few single-malt scotches and Johnnie Walker Gold (though we were told that if we wanted to try Blue Label we'd have to shell out the money ourselves for a bottle ). It's interesting to see and taste the differences in single-malt scotches from different areas of Scotland.

Yea... any single-malt from the Islay region such as Laphroaig and Lagavulin is very much an acquired taste. Very strong peat flavor.
Some of the single-malts from the smaller distilleries are quite good, though they are sometimes hard to find.
