Beatification is the first step toward canonization, or sainthood. When a person is beatified, they are henceforth known as "Blessed" (name). Example: Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Normally, after a minimum of five years after a person's death can one be nominated for sainthood. A very thorough investigation ensues, though the reigining Pope can fast-track the process or name the person a saint outright.
