Very sad week for Auburn
 

On Wed. a Delta Sigma Phi at Auburn was killed in a multi-car accident after night of partying.

Today, a LXA was killed in a single car accident after a night of partying at a LXA band party.

I am not clear as to whether Wed. accident involved alcohol consumed at the fraternity but it is being said that today's accident is related to alcohol consumption at the LXA band party. I also know that Wed. night is typically the night when the Auburn bars close to campus are open for 18 and under and it is typical for the fraternities to host informal pregaming parties before everyone heads out to the bars. Given that the accidents happened off campus but may be linked to alcohol consumed at the fraternities, how will this impact the fraternities?
I do wish that the culture of binge drinking would subside. I partied in college but nothing like what goes on today....

Alcohol and speed were involved in fatal Wed. accident. Student had been at the fraternity prior to the accident.

It is confirmed that alcohol was involved in this crash, and apparently the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

My heart breaks for the family and friends of both victims. The Auburn family has suffered such heartache within the last year what with Lauren Burke, a student killed in a plane crash, and now two deaths within days of each other. It's very sad but I know that the Tiger spirit will prevail and help the student body will overcome this.

How many times can we say it? Alcohol and driving do not mix. This is the reason why we parents loose sleep over our kids when our children are away at school and on their own. The law grants them legal status as an adult but we know by their actions that they are not quite mentally adult. One instance of poor judgment on your child's part and you will never be able to hug them again. With all of the crazy stuff I did in high school and college it is a wonder that I am alive today. I took chances, pushed boundaries, and made poor judgments that could have endangered my well being had circumstances conspired against me. I am here but for the grace of God. I feel terrible for the parents who had to get that phone call...two kids in an accident and one died...I can't imagine being in their shoes...

An additional thought: Since bars can be held liable if they serve alcohol to a person who then drives drunk and causes an accident, and parents can be held liable if there is a party at their house with alcohol and someone leaves and drinks and drives causing an accident, can fraternities be held liable if they serve alcohol to a person who then drives and causes an accident?
What steps do your fraternities take to prevent drinking and driving after they hold a party?

Um, absolutely! And they often are.
