Pi Kappa Alpha rush

One of my friends is considering pike. However, I've heard from someone that pike doesnt take members who have depledged another fraternity in the past. Is this true and how would they know he depledged?

It depends on the chapter and how they run things. But most of the times, yes chapters are reluctant to take a guy who pledged another chapter.

And how would they know if he dropped vs was dropped? They contact someone from the chapter in question.

You're best being upfront with things. The last thing you want is during the pledge process is having an active find out you rushed and were pledging a different fraternity and dropped it before pledging your current one. Though there will be questions about your commitment, it's best to be upfront.

I don't think we're (Pike) any different from any other fraternity in this regard. It depends on the chapter and on the specific circumstances. Probably, the greatest liklihood of conflict would come if the young man depledged and then wanted to pledge Pike the same semester. But, it al depends on the circumstances. He should talk directly to the Pike rush chairman or President to make sure there's no problem.
