Drury (in Missouri): HQs Temporarily Suspend Two Fraternities

The Kappa Alpha and SIgma Nu chapters at Drury have been temporarily suspended:

More details are in the longer article on the Springfield (MO) paper's site -- brief excerpts below --, which reports, among other things, that the suspensions are --

. . . for their involvement in an off-campus party where there was underage drinking.

The Sept. 13 party in rural Stone County led to 16 minors being charged for possession of alcohol and sent an 18-year-old to the hospital for alcohol poisoning.

Stone County Sheriff Richard Hill said he was told members of the Kappa Alpha and Sigma Nu fraternities organized the gathering.

Kappa Alpha's national office confirmed that the local chapter "co-hosted" the party.

Michael Wilson, director of chapter services for Kappa Alpha's national office, said its investigation has revealed members of the Drury chapter violated several provisions of the fraternity's Risk Management Policy.

He said the national office is working with university officials to resolve the matter, and sanctions from the national office are expected to be announced early next week.

"The national organization is considering sanctions that will complement the steps taken by the university," Larry Wiese, executive director for Kappa Alpha Order, said in a prepared statement. . . .

I don't have anything useful to add to this, but it's better than the rumors going around that [rumor deleted].

Another school I've never heard of.

Am told the Sigma Pi chapter is stellar there.

I think Drury has had Greek life for a hundred years or a little more. Didn't Kappa Alpha get chartered there aound 1906, give or take a year or so? And according to irishpipes' list, Zeta Tau Alpha was the first NPC on campus, in 1909, so it's close to the century mark.

Anyway, EW, best wishes to your friends there.

Drury's a pretty small school, and greek life has been around forever. The dynamic between chapters there is a little weird. I seriously doubt sanctions would entail those chapters' removal from campus though.

I'm a KA down in Springfield, not at Drury but at MSU, and the stuff that happened was pretty f***ed up. I know the two are temporarily suspended but the KA chapter is over 100 years old and their alumni are probably pulling some strings so I wouldn't be suprised if they don't get kicked off campus.

Update October 1, 2008: Drury -- Fraternity Sanctions

http://media.www.drurymirror.com/med...-3461029.shtml

For details, see the report ^. The article ^ says that the fraternities have the opportunity to appeal the sanctions. It mentions that Sigma Pi plans to appeal. (I don't know about any of the others.)

Update October 4, 2008 Sigma Pi Appeals

Sigma Pi is appealing the sanctions. Article (below) has interesting quote about -- among other things -- making students sit through yet another alcohol education program. (Don't get me wrong; I'm no fan of binge drinking or being a campus booze supplier for underage students. I can, however, share in wondering what one more lecture / seminar / pep talk will do for young adults who've heard it over and over.)
