csun recruitment
im transferring next year and i just wanted to know if anyone knew how competitive rush is at california state university-northridge. i just want to be prepared. also im an upperclassmen but have atleast a year and a half to two years not including grad-school to go. ive heard differing opinions on whether grad school students can still be considered actives. please let me know how this will effect recruitment :)

Just a note: Whether grad students can be considered actives depends on the SORORITY policies, not the school.

Regarding grad students being considered collegians, there are no differing opinions. Either they're recognized by HQ or they aren't. It's as simple as that. I can think of 2 NPCs who do allow grad students to be recognized as collegians but out of respect for them I won't name them. Just because it is allowed does not, by any means, mean that the individual chapter's obligated to extend that grad student a bid. |
Each sorority is different in that regard. It is a great question to ask during recruitment: "Since I transferred, I will be here for 1-2 years as an undergrad and X # of years as a grad student. I am so anxious to be involved in greek life. Will I be able to participate as a grad student as well?"
That shows real interest and not just that you are rushing to put it on your resume. As far as I know, Kappa allows grad students to remain active if they wish. It does not happen often due to the demands of graduate coursework, but I have seen a few over the years that do it. I have also seen grad students join the local alumnae assn and/or become advisers. We had one grad student at the school where I advise and she served as an adviser for that year and was a great asset to our advisory board. Good luck at CSUN! |
Alpha Xi Delta also allows chapter members who are grad students to remain active chapter members.

I go to csun and it's not very competitive. There are more and more girls going through each year and most end up somewhere. There are a lot of juniors and seniors that end up joining. Hope this helps!

YAYYY!!! OTW, I am so glad you remembered me! outoftheloop, I am more than willing to answer any questions you may have. Regarding you being an upperclass transfer, this will not influence your recruitment experience UNLESS csun registers 3-4 times as many new girls as they did this year. however, this also does NOT mean you will be getting your first choices every round. It just means that you do not need to worry too much about your class standing effecting your recruitment experience. your GPA should definitely be a top priority. get it as high as possible! no joke. GPA is looked at. |
I have been reading Greek Chat for weeks. There is so much great info out there. I am also going to Cal State Northridge in the fall, but I'll be a freshman. My mom's sorority doesn't have a chapter there. I am a legacy of ABC sorority. My grandma didn't think I was; I had to show her the policies from her sorority, and find her the info for sending a recommendation.
I have a more distant relative from XYZ sorority on campus. I am just starting to try and find any other family or friends from the other sororities. The OP asked how competitive recruitment at CSUN is; that is what I would like to know too. Should I spend a lot of time going through family contacts, the local alumnae assoc, etc, to get recommendations for all the sororities on campus? They are: Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Zeta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma. cali_gossip said that "most end up somewhere". I really don't want to be one who doesn't make it. I read nervousmama's story. Its weird knowing that I could meet both of them next fall. I don't want to be a stalker, but I would appreciate it if either one of you, or anyone else on GC, could give me any specific info on CSUN. A friend of mine emailed the contact for Greek Life at CSUN with all of the suggested questions that we saw here on GC about recruitment (like What goes on at recruitment events? How should I dress for the recruitment events?, etc). She never got an answer. Thanks for any info anyone can give me. |

hello take 5, man, you are an early bird! honestily, please dont even think about what to wear till june, till then, keep your gpa the highest it can be because some houses automatically have to cut you due to GPA reasons. try to see if you can leave HS with a 3.0 then you can get a fair shot at all houses during recruitment. |
Nervousmama, your posts about rushing were so much fun to read. I really enjoyed it.
I'll be transferring there this fall. I'm an upperclassman majoring in chemistry. I'd like to get my masters there too. I found this forum and was searching for 'CSUN' because I had a couple of questions. I'm really happy that the sororities at CSUN accept juniors and seniors, but I'm wondering if they accept non-traditional students. Non-traditional as in...I'm 31 years old and have been married almost two years. I'm not worried about not having enough time for college or Greek life; I'll be in college full time. I'm curious if there are age requirements or if sororities might think it odd to have a married women rush. Has there been any instances of married women joining a sorority? Perhaps I will meet you Nervousmama and I can tell you how awesome your rush story was in person. :D |
Yikes, I didn't realize the last post on this thread was a year off. I'm so sorry for reviving an old thread. In any case my question still stands; I would really appreciate any thoughts about it.

I don't know that any chapter has an age requirement, but it is up to them to decide whether to bid a 31-year-old.
I also don't know what the campus culture of CSUN is like. It also depends on whether the typical sorority member at CSUN is a traditional student. At schools where the typical sorority member is 18-21/22, chapters are less likely to consider bidding a PNM of non-traditional age. |
Thanks for the reply KSUViolet. I did some research on my own yesterday evening and I haven't found any sorority with an age limit.
I understand that it's up to the individual sororities at CSUN if they want to bid on me or not. If age is a sticking point, so be it. I'm pretty sure I'm still going to try anyway; it might not be an issue and there is the potential to meet an awesome group of women. |
