What is a "line?"

I probably sound really dumb for asking this, but what exactly is a "line?" http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif What does everyone mean when they say I'm waiting in line? Is it basically just all the people that are in your pledge class waiting to become full members? I have never heard this term until I started posting in here. Thanks!

The term 'line' is an NPHC thing, although it has be adopted by the Asian, Latino/a, and Multi-cultural groups.

NPC and NIC groups use the term New Member or Pledge class.

Barbara is right. The term started because NPHC frats/sororities used to make their pledgees walk around in a continous "line" while together on campus, usually from shortest to tallest. Because of this the question would be "Who's on line for XYZ?" or "Did you know so and so was on line for ABC?"
Typically they also wore matching clothes in their organization's colors, so you knew right away what organization they were pledging. Even though the NPHC outlawed this type of pledging in 1990 you will still hear members say things like "line" or "linesisters/brothers (the other people that pledged/joined with you).
