How do I start Alpha Delta Phi on my campus?
 

I am looking to start a chapter of Alpha Delta Phi, or maybe another frat on my campus. How do I do that?

Before starting a new group, I am always inclined to suggest that you go through formal recruitment and see what is already being offered.

Fraternities, depending on their size and resources, expand two ways:

1) Representatives from the national office contact colleges and universities with an interest to expand.
2) Interested students from a college or university contact a national office and ask for an interest group/meeting.

Either scenario requires you to communicate with your school and with the national office of the group that you are interested in starting.

I did go thru Rush and rushed Sig Ep, and I didn't get in. My school currently only has 2 fraternities and supposedly is getting another one next semester. But is it hard to get the national office to let you have a chapter on campus? I know my college admin will be tough, but I'll deal with that then.

My understanding is that ADPhi is actively seeking to expand nationally, so you may be in luck.

I know of only one Alpha Delt on GC, but I am guessing he might respond to this thread. Maybe he'll be able to help you more.

I will say that if a 3rd group is colonizing on your campus next semester, it might be a good idea to check them out rather than start your own thing. You're right that if a 3rd group is coming, the school might not want to recognize a 4th group so soon (depending, obviously, on the school). Plus the first steps have already been taken care of for you with that option.

I'm surprised it hasn't been said yet. Not getting a bid to a fraternity on campus isn't an excuse to start a chapter of a different fraternity. Getting a fraternity to colonize on your campus takes a lot of time and effort that, for most people, isn't worth it.

You said in the other thread that you're already older and you just didn't get a bid when you rushed before. AWFUL AWFUL reason to start a new fraternity.

ETA: Because you have to get other people to join too, and your story of "Well, I didn't get a bid at the house I actually liked but I wanted to be in a fraternity, so I started one." isn't exactly going to motivate other people into thinking that you're building a house that's going anywhere.

That and the fact that no major national organization is going to pour time and resources into forming a colony at a school only because one guy didn't get into the two existing chapters.

Most organizations consider new colonies to be worthy of significant contributions of time, money and manpower from the national organization. You'd better be able to give them a better reason than what you gave us as to why they would be successful on that campus.

Also, many organizations, I don't know anything about AD Phi are not going to expand to small campuses as they are focused on recolonizing their chapters on major campuses as well as colonizing in places where there is either a groundswell of alumni support or unique opportunities for success.

To be perfectly honest, if your school only has two existing chapters, you're not going to find too many national organizations willing to take a chance on you. That might be different if you can realistically put together a local organization which is equal in size and prospects to any other organization on campus. If that's the case, you'll find many organizations are a lot more willing to take a chance with you.

So you'd lie to ADPhi nationals, that's going to make them want to coloniz (Along with finding enough interested parties to form an interest group to actually attract attention to them). It's obvious you're still not over getting dropped from Sig Ep.

Actually I do think having as storied and elite fraternity such as them would add much to the school and the fraternity. More peeps would get interest in ADPhi too

You don't seem to understand how to attract a NIC fraternity to a campus. You need to have an interest group of people if you want them to even consider you.

Put yourself in their shoes.

They have limited resources and can only choose let's say 1-5 (I have no clue how big they are) new places to colonize every year.

Your best selling point is "I wasn't satisfied with my choices" [and that's a lie].

To the OP, there is at least one guy on here who is involved with Alpha Delt on a national level, so you should watch what you say.
