COB Questions
 

Ok, So I just went through formal recruitment ,and I wasn't invited back to any of the houses. My Rho Gamma said she would inform me of COB, but I was wondering if I should even go through with it? I'm a transfer student at a pretty large university, but students that participate in Greek life is a small percentage. I'm a junior credit wise, but I still have an extra year of college due to a change in major. I've always wanted to participate in Greek life, but I'm afraid its just too late. I have a good GPA and am involved in activities. Also, this may sound cocky, but I've always been told that I'm always a happy and personable person. Do you think its worth it to go through COB? I think that the main reason I got cut is because I am a junior and the university I attend doesn't have a separate quota for sophomores/juniors. Please give me your honest opinion! :)

No one here can tell you because the decision lies in the hands of the sorority members on your campus. If you really want to participate in Greek life, your only realistic chance is by pledging in college. With your class status, the sooner you put yourself out there, the better. There are no guarantees one way or the other unless you decide not to try.

in a nutshell.

There are several people on the boards this fall who were cut and then received a COB bid. It seems to me that COB, when available, gives you more scope to let the sorority know you than Formal, if there are large numbers going through formal recruitment. If your self confidence can stand one more try, you should go for it.

This may be your last realistic chance, so it's definitely worth a look. Your chances won't get any better next year as a senior, particularly at a large school. Even though you may have an extra year left, some NPCs require 5th years to take alum status, so it may not matter when you're graduating.

Going to COB events isn't a pain in the ass like formal rush can be. You basically go to a party and hang out with a lot of nice girls and probably do something fun - the time restrictions and things like that aren't present. It's much more relaxed. So I would definitely look into it - even if you don't receive a bid you most likely will meet lots of nice people and have fun. :)

Also I would double check with the registrar and the Greek Life office to make sure everything is squared away with your GPA transferring. This may have been one of the reasons you didn't get asked back anywhere during formal rush.

I definitely agree with KSUViolet, it really depends on your school. For example, at my school we have COB in the fall and formal in the spring, and during COB there are a decent amount of juniors that get in - in fact this year and last year a couple of the sororities have taken seniors (and keep in mind I go to a small school with only four sororities). A few of my friends who are in sororities went through formal, got dropped, and ended up getting a bid either during COB or ended up getting snap bids right after formal recruitment was over (although that's an incredibly rare case). So look around at your school, do you know of anyone who has been of junior standing and gotten into a sorority? If so then why not? I say don't give up if joining a sorority is something that you want to do. ^_^.
