Chapter House

Hey folks...

I've been looking through the ConStat for about 5 minutes looking for Lambda Chi Alpha's legal definition of a Chapter House. Then I figured... You guys probably already know this off the top of your head and I might as well ask here. Reason being sororities national rules disallow them to have functions with alcohol that they co-sponsor or take place at a fraternity house. We do not have a house on campus and are trying to have a date function at a brothers home off campus and our Greek Life director is denying it on the grounds that our brothers off campus home is our fraternity house... which it isn't.

Ok... first one with an answer wins!

Ah the era of Big Brother lives on.

Only in 2008 college America can paying students be told that they cant get together with their dates at a building that has nothing to do with the university. Sounds almost like the operations at a major state prison

Sad indeed.

Chapter House

The definition of chapter house in the context of the NPC guidelines for social events is a functional one, not a legal one. If your chapter uses that location as a place for fraternity events - and it is the location that the undergraduates regard as a primary location for the fraternity's events, then it will be the chapter house. You can not get around this rule by stipulating that only one location is the chapter house. The NPC rule makes are too smart for that strategy.

Most appreciative... PM me if you have any suggestions on the topic... Its weird when you try to do your best to follow the rules there is always something.

I concur - the "Duck" rule

We do not define a chapter house in our rules, but I would apply the "Duck" test. If it looks like a chapter house, is used as a chapter house, and is considered to be a chapter house, then it is a chapter house.

Years ago Towson State got into trouble on this point: They didn't have a 'chapter house' but there was an off-campus house where guys lived, trophies were displayed, and the bar in the basement had a neon sign that said LXA. Ask yourself the question: Can this place pass the "duck" test?

Again thanks for all the help... You're all winners... lol that was cheesy as hell

Agreed Leno.

Sad situation indeed.

is this like for all fraternitys or just lxa?

GammaZeta 09-17-2008 05:58 PM

It varies frat to frat.

A little update...

The campus official had believed it to be a mixer/co-sponsored event. Since its a 2 date per brother event, and there are girls from other organizations and some that are un-affiliated it should be fine.

Oh the system.
