SIGMAPALOOZA...calling all bands

Hey Guys
The event is forever and a day away, but I want to be sure to get some truly kick-ass bands again this year. This is an enormous party we have every year, well...this will be third annual. It's solely put on by my chapter and last year we had around 1,500 people show up for it. We had 5 wonderful bands and a good deal of liquid entertainment, 50 kegs or so...

It's a huge party though, we had kids showing up from over 3 hours away...I met a girl at the Little 5 at IU, and she was like, "wow, you're a Sigma Chi from Louisville...I went to your party and it was amazing." -- No shit

We're looking to start getting actually big-time bands playing perhaps in the next year or two, but I want as many options as possible, and I actually want multiple stages from here on out, so if any of you play in a band, or know of a good local band...I really want O.A.R. to come, but I'm not so sure...but if you know of any good bands, please contact me. Because we're looking to get some truly established bands, we would love any and all bands willing to play for entrance, refreshments, and gas to and fro, but that can be discussed after I hear the demo tapes...

I believe that another school from northern Indiana is intending to co-host it with us this year, Sigma Chi brothers, of course...But that may mean virtually unlimited funds with the combination we can make of it...I shall make sure to note it here again later in the school year, but respond as soon as you can, because the planning for this is year long. As I said, last year we had 1,500, the year before we had 500 and that was the inaugural year for the party. I'm quite frightened to guess the number of people that will make the trip this year. I hope to have at least 10 bands, though hopefully more...it really depends on our finances...but I anticipate that this year it will begin around 12am because last year it began at 4pm and it was packed from the word go. I know we have a long way to go, but I want to make this the place to be if your a college kid in a surrounding state.

So I use this as a promotional tool, a plea for musical brilliance, and an open invite to all...give me a PM or an email, either is greatly appreciated.

Some awesome bands that play Carbondale

Hey Cory:

Here are some ideas:

MikeandJoe (aka Michaelanjelo) - based out of Chicago, mostly DMB, matchbox 20 covers, always an awesome time when they play here, everyone here looks forward to when they come down to SIUC

Others:Hello Dave, Crush (DMB Cover Band), Dr Zhivegas (70s and 80s), Remedy

Best Bet if you can book them: The Urge - another great show, they usually always sell out here and in St. Louis.

Good Luck and let me know what happens!

I don't know of any bands, but if you'd let me know about this great party some friends & I might make a road trip from Cincinnati.

Cory-
A local band from Austin who is totally kick ass is Dexter Freebish.
They have a website where you can hear their songs and get in touch with them. They played at EdgeFest this year. I highly recomend 'Leaving Town'.
Then there is:
Bowling for Soup from Dallas (I Love Them!!)
Falling Jupiter from Lubbock
and Flicker Stick from Dallas
I hope that helps. Let me know who you get to play because I might fly into Kentucky with some of my sisters for a great concert!

In the spirit of last nights concert, I'm again refocusing much of my time to my concert listing for the party I'd before discussed. Here is a list of the bands I'm currently working on, and we def will not have them all, but if you know any others that fit this genre, or you'd recommend...here's what I'm looking at though

O.A.R
Pat McGee
The Muckrakers
Ekoostik Hookah
Admiral Walker
Guster
Hello Dave
Crush
Virginia Coalition
Weekend Excursion
Llama
Dispatch
Strangefolk
Crush
Tweed
Howie Day
Ordinary Peoples
Vertical Horizon
Georgia Avenue

Many of these are quintessential college bands, and most all tour together alot, so we'll see what happens, but give me some input...I'm hosting a prelim meeting to start making some executive decisions on this shit tonight. That being...others party chairs and myself are going to get drunk and listen to some of these bands and decide whether or not they're good enough for our party. Anyway, any insight?

If you're looking for fun bands who might just play for beer money . . . maybe try:

Less Than Jake - big name, fun guys
The Vandals - one of the best live bands ever
2 Skinnee J's - extremely fun
Filibuster
MU330
the Slackers
Reverend Horton Heat
Clever
O'Phil
Phunk Junkeez
Addison Groove Project
the Scofflaws
Kara's Flowers
Zebrahead

. . . and I definitely agree on the Urge - every time i've seen them they've been freaking amazing.

Hello Dave

Cory - Whats the update on Sigmapalooza? Just got back from hello dave in carbondale - have you/do want to book them? Any bands definintely? When is it? Are GCers invited?

SigmaChiCard 11-12-2001 08:36 AM

The update:

I've been lazy on bands, in fact I'm so physically depleted I've been lazy on everything, but most likely we will be holding the event at a hanger shed at our local airport, far away from anything. At this shed, a door nearly the size of the wall opens onto a small runway, then ends shortly after into an expansive field. We get all of that if we want it, so it's good rain or shine now for the party, which is nice. The hanger shed alone is huge, so our capacity is going to only be limited by how many admission slips we wish to buy.

I def invite all GCers, but I also invite every college student alive because it, at least for me and my peers, has always been the most amazing 10 hours of partying ever. All of my out-of-state-but-not-too-many-states-away friends always come too, which is fun when they bring their friends. anyway, if anyone is curious, or has bands suggestions, let me know via PM

Well, I'm old and out of the loop, so I haven't heard of a lot of the bands mentioned here. BUT...I wanted to tell you about this great band -- I used to go to their shows all the time, back in the day, when I was in college. They're called House of Large Sizes, and they're from Iowa. They have a web page --http://home.earthlink.net/~mcweber/hols/index.html
and they rock. They just toured with Frank Black (ex Pixies) and they are still one of the best bands live bands, ever.
