Random Question

A fellow DG asked me this question and I had no idea what the right answer is. If you know it, please let me know:

Can a foreign student studying abroad at a US school for a year go through recruitment and join a sorority?

The basics of the situation are:
Many of the girls in this chapter have become good friends with a student studying from Oxford. The girl is (reportedly) great: pretty, smart, and involved. She is half-American, but was raised in the UK, and she is a legacy on her mother's side (not sure if it is the mom or grandmom). She would love to COB and the chapter is interested in her. Can she?

And before anyone gets pissy at me:
-I am not this girl nor her parent, aunt, cousin, or any such thing
-I am not a member of this chapter
-Other than maybe getting a cool new sister, I have no personal stake in the issue

I think a couple of fraternities at my school have pledged British students studying abroad. I don't know if they were really supposed to or whether the rules are the same for sororities though.

If she is enrolled as a full time student and meets the local CPCs requirements then they could bid her.

I would assume that if she meets NPC and local Panhellenic requirements to go through recruitment, she could.

Assuming she is a full time student at the school, meets any GPA requirements, etc.

Is she (A) Is she enrolled full time at the university? Or (B) is she enrolled at her home institution and receiving credit through them for the study abroad?

If A--> probably yes

If B --> No, she is not eligible

My chapter did pledge a student from the UK who was studying abroad at our school for one year. She was an AWESOME member.

Frankly, we pretty much knew we were going to get her because most of the other chapters probably wouldn't pledge her because she was only going to be around for a semester (we had deferred recruitment). It's sort of similar to the philosophy of, pledge freshmen rather than juniors because it's two more years of tuition.

We never regretted pledging and initiating this member for one second though! :)

I have read articles in the Anchora about foreign students Delta Gamma has pledged. It's no problem as long as she is properly enrolled and meets the campus and chapter criteria.

Look at the Constitution and Policies and Procedures. If she's enrolled, and she's present on campus, I don't see why not.

Thanks guys! I advised my friend to speak with the CPC and look at the Constitution and Policies and Procedures like AnchorAlumna advised. Your advice was great.
