A new Frat

Hi, I belong to a Renaissance re-enactment guild here in Las Vegas and we have been discussing becoming a fraternity. Would you be able to help us with this or give us a starting point. We are not even sure if this can be done outside a school environment. Thank you, Jon Lowry

What would you do, reinact scenes from some of the Rennaisance's bitchinist parties?

It all depends if you want to be recognized by the school as an official student organization. If your group is already recognized, then it should not be any big affair to change your name to something composed of greek letters though that might invite some questions and scrutiny.

Where it might become an issue is if you want to have a pledge period and not allow membership for all who seek to join your group.

Let me ask you this, why are you considering becoming a fraternity? What is the appeal? Where are the benefits?

I ask this because the current reason you state for your organizational structure is a specific hobby interest which should- in and of itself- attract potential members who will want to be part of your club and its goals.

Becoming a fraternal organization with specific membership requirements and- perhaps- a pledging period, just seems to add unnecessary burdens to how you are operating currently.

If you are hoping becoming a fraternity will- in and of itself- boost your membership, I would caution you that I do not think that would be the case.

NO, IT CANT BE DONE

I have read some of the statements made and most of them are either wrong, or being published by an undergrade. You have to be in a recognized school with a chapter, and maintain at least a 2.5 PGA to pleadge. I am an Omega Man (Mu Psi), and a Past Master. I have crossed over, been through the desert and back, tried and ready to be tried again. I bark hard, and play rough, but most importantly I care. So if you pledged or not, I will tell you what I can. I will leave you with this, "Friendship is essential to the soul". So to ask one is to know one, and to be one you must pledge one.

First of all, you need to learn how to spell before you start trying to call people out.

The requirements that you've listed may be relevant in Omega, but the OP stated that he wanted to start a NEW frat. The rules and regulations would be up to him.
