non-Greek.

so long story short, i'm non-Greek. i planned on participating in formal recruitment my freshman year, but ended up having to withdraw from a class (which put me under the required min. credits...ok for the university, not ok for rushing). i really was looking forward to formal recruitment, and was quite upset with myself for not being able to do better. this is where i got stupid...

so my friend and i randomly pick up a hoodie with XYZ letters. it's not worn (never has been, never will be), but it is in a private place where it serves as motivation for improving my grades, breaking out of my shy shell, etc. i don't claim to be Greek or anything of the sort, it's more to personally get me on track.

here's the thing...if i make the grades/credits to participate THIS year, will owning that matter? i already feel weird/bad enough for even thinking about picking it up. i'm just the type of person that needs visual motivation and what not. also, since i'm not Greek, i really didn't know what was ok and what wasn't. obviously wearing them isn't, i know. but could i donate it to my chapter here (anonymously of course)? what else could i do with it?

i know i probably broke like the biggest Greek rule there is, but it was a random spur of the moment thing and i honestly didn't know. i truly feel very bad:(; i just need some advice on what to do, how to treat the situation, etc. any helpful advice would be great!

Sure, just donate it to the chapter. Or, if you have a friend in that chapter, you could give it to them as a gift. If all else fails, can it be returned?

Well, it's too late to tell you not to buy it. It is sort of odd, but if it motivates you I guess it's done its job.

But I would make certain that you keep it hidden (I'm talking locked) away from your roommate or anyone else and make sure no one ever ever EVER sees it. And DON'T donate it to the local chapter - honestly, your best thing (if you don't rush and/or end up in that group) would be to sell it on ebay or take it to a Goodwill. Nowhere it can be traced back to you.

I'm sorry, but this strikes me as odd.

Yeah it's too late to tell you to take it back.

Selling it on eBay is probably best.

Note: I seriously would not let any of your sorority member friends know you have it. They may be a little weirded out about you buying Greek merchandise (since it can seem a little more like being presumptuous than motivation to them).

Also note, you should want to do well in school so you can graduate, get a good job, etc. Not just so you can be in a sorority.

You do know if you did make the grades and go through recruitment, you might not get into XYZ.

I agree with 33girl, don't donate it to the chapter. Sell it on ebay.

True, keep in mind that making the required GPA and being able to go through recruitment doesn't guarantee that you will get a bid to XYZ.

Recruitment is a complex process and everyone who goes through does not get into the sorority that they want (which is why it is no a good idea for people to be set on one particular sorority).

agreed.

Recruitment is a complex process. XYZ might decide not to extend you a bid or during recruitment, you might find that the group wasn't for you afterall.

If I knew a PNM had letters to my GLO and wanted to join mine, it'd be an automatic no. That's just a little too strange. I think other orgs would be turned away, even if it was not their letters.
