Rollins College Chapter?
Does anybody know approximately what years the Rollins chapter was open?
|
They were chartered in 1929, but I don't know when they closed.
|
Aha... I know they were at least open into the 60s...
This is silly, but I ask because a coworker claims he dated a Phi Mu from Rollins - and as far as I knew, that chapter has been closed for some time... admittedly, I don't know that much about Greek life at Rollins (even though I've lived in the area for a few years!) This guy has been lying for months about various things, so I'm not sure this Rollins Phi Mu girlfriend thing adds up either... and I aim to find out! |
Is he sure it was Rollins? There was another chapter in the 80-ish era that didn't quite make it at another central FL school. Can't remember the name but they are quite active alumnae in the Orlando (LOL) area alumnae chapters. I remember them from State Day '07 in Orlando.

I think these are all of the Florida Phi Mu chapters:
U of West Florida (Pensacola) 1973-1987 Florida Atlantic (Boca Raton) 1970-1975 Florida International (Miami) 1988-Present Florida Southern College (Lakeland) 1954-? Florida State U. (Tallahassee) 1929-Present Lynn U. (Boca Raton) Colony 2008 Rollins (Winter Park) 1929-? St. Leo College (St. Leo) ?-? Stetson (DeLand) 1949-? UF (Gainesville) Present |
He implied that he dated her WHILE she was a Phi Mu at Rollins, so I don't see much room for confusion on his part. :) Plus, I know that he lived in Orlando his whole life, so it would be the only school that makes sense..
Granted, he is about ten years older than me so this could have been ten or fifteen years ago... but for some reason, I was under the impression that the Rollins chapter had been closed for a couple decades already. I hate to be so suspicious, but next to nothing this fella says has been true (lying about everything from military service to being a "world class" musician), and it will irk me if he is lying about dating a sister. Our boss is a fraternity man and this coworker ALSO claims to have spent "lots of time" with the XYZ brothers as well during his college years. Hmm... |
Rollins College
When in doubt-check the History of Phi Mu (the first 150 years). According to my book it says:
Alpha Omega-Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida Installation: September 24, 1929, by Clara Raynor Rader, First VP; 11 collegians and 7 alumnae initiated. History; Alpha Omega local sororitiy organized fall 1926 by seven students, petitioned Phi Mu at 1929 convention with 18 in petitioning group. Advised by Florence Pickard Harrisbon, Xi, in petitioning efforts. After membership struggles, chapter closed August 18, 1997. I hope that helps.... Lion Love! |
THANK YOU, 1Hand!!! I obviously need to buy this book, because I just love learning all the historical details and stories. I don't see it for sale on Carnation Collection anymore, though... boo!
For the record, this date of closing DOES make it feasible that he could have dated a Phi Mu.. or at least have been acquainted with one at the time. :P |
Yeah, I don't own that book either obviously. :(
|
we have the book in our chapter house! it's so sad so many florida chapters closed down, it'd be nice not to be one of 3 and have all of them! I guess this happens to a lot of schools and chapters, but I truly hope to see them re-colonized again!

Closed chapters

Yes, but, if you read the back of the book you'll see why some chapters closed down. It didn't always have something to do with low numbers. Some were closed down so we could join the NPC (schools-in general...not just Florida)..I've also noticed a trend in that section of the book. Some things say we closed down because of campus climate (the Depression or Vietnam era), others for lack of numbers but, some it doesn't give a reason...I'm wondering if the ones it doesn't give a reason for are because the charter was pulled due to "hazing".... I know that Widener in Pennsylvania had its charter pulled for "hazing" and I even read about some of the stuff they did in the book "Pledged"....I also came across a story on line about a girl who was hazed at Widener by our organization. Maybe we are hesitant to say it was due to "hazing" in the book because it looks like we have no class. Not sure. Maybe someone can shed some light on this... |
How sad and wonderful that Phi Mu used to be at Florida Southern. I may move to Lakeland within the year and it'd be nice to have some local collegiate-level involvement.
|
Well, soon there will be FOUR Florida chapters... something to look forward to! :)
