Comcast to limit customers' internet usage

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080829/...st_internet_dc

I admit, I'm not a tech person, so I'm unsure how this will affect me as a consumer. I have Comcast internet, and while I'm not home that much, I use internet quite a bit for school.

Thoughts from those with tech knowledge?

(If this should go in the Entertainment Forum or Chit Chat, please feel free to move the thread. I frankly wasn't sure of the appropriate place.)

I read that earlier. The 250 GB cap shouldn't affect too many people (the average consumer uses well below that amount), but if I'm paying for access, I want to be able to use as much as I see fit.

Interesting.

Over 250 GIGS A MONTH is a LOT, even for the most porn and music obsessed illegal downloaders.

Moderation is key, people.

However, I do agree with k_s here.

Ok, that all makes sense. I generally use the internet at home for law school stuff, fantasy baseball, GC, and catching up on news (ESPN/CNN/etc.), so I guess it won't really affect me.

I kicked Comcast to the curb a few weeks ago when they closed Port 25 on outgoing email servers. I use a laptop, and my email comes through my company's domain. All of the sudden I noticed that I couldn't send emails from home, even though I could receive. I could still send email from work (Charter). It took a couple of weeks until I figured out that they had closed the port it in an attempt to curb spam. More like throwing the baby out with the bath water.... The next day I had DSL and satellite. I'm paying $30 less per month for the same internet speeds PLUS tons more TV and HD channels PLUS a land line.

/commercial :D

I'm so glad I saw this thread! I was just about to switch to Comcast. eek.

I'm wondering how that will effect people with a home network though.. I have no idea how many GB I utilize a month, but my son, while playing Call of Duty, Halo3, XBoxLive.. <shrug> he may use a lot. With 4 PCs, all of which have Itunes and stuff, we could be up there. Who has any clue how much they use in a month???

This will impact hardly anyone. I read that you have to download something like 20 feature length movies per day to reach the limit.

Believe it or not, most carriers cap usage at far less or make you pay for more. And though you may think DSL is the same speed, technically it's not; you just may not notice the difference if you're not using it for streaming media. Cable and fiber are waaaaay faster.

I am happy we don't have Comcast down here.....It was the only carrier where I went to college and the service sucked!
