Please help: KA-UGA/neighborhood
 

Hello,
I live quite close to the new KA house on Hancock in Athen, GA. I read a previous thread debating the race issues. While this is a concern of mine, I also have more self-centered concerns. I am a grad student at UGA-this means I study and work (in a good week) at least 60 hrs/week. So, I have to get up pretty early, and I work late into the night, which is one reason I moved into a more residential neighborhood. I'd like to get an idea, from the Greek community, how loud it's going to be. In the past week, there have been two nights which I found their activities to be disruptive. Will this die down as the semester gets underway? I guess what I'm asking is this: if I'm patient and look the other way during the beginning of the semester (and probably home games), will the rest of the semester be quiet? Will they adjust their behavior (at least somewhat) to the neighborhood they've moved into? I'm trying to be open-minded, and I hope I haven't offended anyone, but I'm really nervous. I wasn't in the Greek system as an undergrad and have never lived this close to a frat house, so I really don't know what to expect. :confused:

Rude? Not really. Just telling the truth. It wont get better (and probably a bit worse).

And because I don't think it's in an area zoned purely residential, not a lot one could do about it.

I can't speak for your exact situation, but I do have experience living verrrry near a college campus.

Our condo bldg was next door to a house that was rented to at least 6 students. Not a frat house, but rambunctious college boys nonetheless, who apparantly had lots of friends.

As the weather cooled off, the parties became more frequent and louder. In other words, they began taking the party outside to enjoy the fall air.

Again, can't speak for UGA, but would think with football season approaching and cooler temps around the corner, there is a strong chance that the parties will just continue. If there is a balcony/deck/yard they will no doubt be louder.

I have found that a white noise machine is very useful - I can now sleep through almost anything as long as I have it going.
There will undoubtly be some noisy events throughout the year - but I imagine the majority of time it will not be a problem. Just be prepared to take defensive measures - white noise machine, noise cancelling headphones - or to go study at the library or local coffee shop.
It's true of all college neighborhoods - there will be some noise. Good luck in your studies.

In college, I bought a clock that makes thunderstorm noises. So when I lived in the dorms right by the fraternities, I just played my thunderstorm noises all the time. I still like that thing :)

If you're a grad student maybe moving next to the fraternity house wasn't the greatest idea.

BUT, I live IN a house and don't have any problem getting my work done though, so unless you're just out looking for something to be upset about, you'll be fine. Stop thinking "Oh living next to these frat guys is going to be awful!" and it won't seem so bad.

I was about to say, I get all my shit done and I live right next door to it.

I agree. To the OP, UGA has multiple libraries and designated quiet zones to study. You can also get earplugs for sleep.

ETA: I would NOT go to the house and ask them to quiet down. LOL!

People (especially non-greeks) love bringing up race with KA. Anytime you have a problem with KA it's easy to casually brand them as racists while you do.

And yeah, DO NOT go tell them to be quiet.

The biggest problem with noise that is KA specific is that some chapters still have mini-cannons which they will on occasion shoot. Not usually a middle of the night thing though.

two clarifications-i did not move in next to a fraternity, i chose a neighborhood and a few years later a fraternity moved in (BUT, i'm not trying to start some kind of "i was here first" discussion, that doesn't really matter at this point) and i brought up the race issue because i've seen it discussed here before so i wanted to at least acknowledge it, but not discuss it in this thread.
i do really appreciate the suggestions.

I am sure there are noise restrictions in your area. If it is to loud, then feel free to call the local law enforcement;)
