Can Anyone Please help? Verrrrrry Important Question
I am rushing this year as a sophomore. I am already planning on studying aborad for fall and winter quarters of next year when I am a junior. Since I am a sophomore with a lot of friends in panhel sororities I know they all have one person in the new class pair with a girl from the previous class to be big sis/lil sis. If I join, then I am gone next year abroad I will miss rush. Are girls aloud to study abroad and miss rush? Will I not have a lil sis? No one has been able to answer cause its such an odd question and no ones asked before. Anyone have experiance? Please help!

If you plan on going abroad after joining, I would make sure that you let the sororities know during recruitment that you're planning on going abroad for a year, so that they can decide whether they would want to have you as a new member, knowing that you're going to be gone for a year.
Or, you could wait until you get back from going abroad and then rush. That seems more logical to me. You will obviously not be able to have a new member period while you're gone and you're going to miss out on some things. |
This is in the wrong forum. You'll want to move this over to recruitment.
Just fyi. My chapter pledged a sophomore who is currently studying abroad for a year. She will be fulfilling her duties as a big sis when she returns from abroad. I'd first worry about getting through recruitment. Depending on where you are pledging, your status as a sophmore is much more likely to hurt you, making it a possibility you may not even have to worry about this. If you do become an active sister in a sorority, your national organization and chapter will be much more equipped to help you with this issue. Good luck with rush. |

I agree w/ the previous post - concentrate on getting into a sorority first before you worry about things like taking a little. |
When you go through recruitment let going abroad be a discussion topic. Tell the actives that you are interested in going and why. You will have a great conversation and it will help you stand apart from other PNMs. It also helps that you have goals and ambitions - - something a lot of sororities are looking for right off the bat. Just back it up with how interested you are in becoming involved with the sorority when you get back. That should help balance the negative. I know my sorority has applications for big sis/lil sis because we have more actives then PNMs. If they are like mine then you wont miss much because you will have a chance when you get back. But I definitely think you should rush before you go because a lot of sororities are weary about taking older girls.
