Hurricane Fay may be heading to FSU during Rush Week!

My daughter is leaving tomorrow (Sunday) for FSU...and according to the NHC, Hurricane Fay is forecast (at this time, anyway) to be making a beeline that way.

I know a lot depends on intensity of the storm, but would Recruitment be postponed in the event of a hurricane?

Her apartment is at HG - but she'll be staying in my aunt's house until she can move in on Wednesday/Thursday.

If any of you were at FSU during other hurricanes/tropical storms - can you share how Tallahassee generally fares during these? I think they're far enough inland to not have storm surge be an issue. Are some of the buildings at FSU used for hurricane shelters?

Thanks for any info you can share.

I definitely remember some threads about UCF rush being postponed due to hurricanes.. I think that was the year of Katrina, when there were so many. I don't think UCF was the only one either. If you use the google search, you may be able to find more info.

ETA: 2004... some postponed due to Charley, others due to Frances...

they would not jeapordize anyones safety by running recruitment during a hurricane(or tropical storm for that matter).

we had just completed recruitment my freshman year when a hurricane struck-the first day of class was postponed. i can't remember any significant damage(some old oak trees lost some huge limbs, which campus maintenance cleaned up as soon as it was safe to do so) or inconvience-everyone was told to stay in their dorms. i was in landis hall-an older dorm which weathered the storm well.

tallahassee is about 30 some odd miles inland from the coast.

I'm from Panama City, so I have plenty of experience on the hurricane front. Personally I don't think twice about a hurricane if it's a cat 2 or below, but if it strengthens and stays on it's projected path, I'm sure recruitment will be postponed. Most of the buildings in Tallahassee are old and sturdy. Usually the most damage from hurricanes comes from trees and flooding. Without the possibility of a storm surge, I don't think flooding will be a huge issue here.

I have pre-recruitment again tomorrow, so if any issues about the plan for a hurricane are mentioned, I'll let you know.

I was wondering the same thing. I'll call my daughter a little later today to see if they are even talking about it yet. This is her first year on the member side of recruitment. Last week Panhellenic required everyone to deactivate facebook accounts. (dirty rushing) One sorority had a bout of food poisioning. Now Fay seems to be heading to Tally.

Hurricanes are nothing new to schools in Florida. I know that UCF had to postpone recruitment in the past due to a hurricane. I'm sure that FSU has a plan in place should a hurricane occur before or during recruitment. They will not proceed with recruitment at the expense of student's safety.

Here is the UCF news from 2004. That year this particular area of Fl was hit by 4 hurricanes, beginning with Charley Aug 13, and they all went through the area near UCF.
