Alumni T-shirt help
 

I am an alumni of a sorority and have been put in charge of creating a shirt for your alumnea to wear at homecomeing. Since we will be enjoying adult beverages I need a saying that doesn't have our letters.

Does anyone have any ideas or has seen something in the past that would be good????

If they are alumnae, they are of legal drinking age. Why can't they wear letters while drinking? (Or will this be getting shnockered kind of drinking?)

It's homecoming. They will be schnockered at the very least.

If you have a certain song that is special to your chapter, try putting a phrase from the song on it. (I don't think ASCAP will get after you.)

The letters thing is sometimes about the culture of the organization and/or people not wanting to represent their organization as "the group that screams uncontrollably with beers in their hands." I've seen older members wear letters when drinking, because they say it's about how you act and not what you're drinking, and I've seen older members say wearing letters when drinking is inappropriate.

I don't know what the venue will be or what you all will be drinking (wine and mojitos versus beer and shots). I'm answering this partially based on my experiences with the culture of my sorority--I wouldn't do a "saying." I would put the shirt in your sorority's colors with the word "ALUMNAE" on the front and maybe also spelling out the sorority, which is different than having the letters/symbols. I've seen that done with NPHC and NPC before. I would personally prefer the shirt in the org's colors and just the word "ALUMNAE"---not particularly fun but very...alumnae. :)

What about a version of the shirts that the collegians will be wearing, with Alumnae on the front where names usually go?

a BIG reason is that you are representing the organization as a whole. This is a big no no I know in Alpha Delta pi, regardless of age. No drinking or smoking in letters. It is a sign of respect to not only yourself, but also your organization. Most sorority women can be found in letters daily, lavaliers included, and should not smoke or drink wearing a lavalier.

onehundone, unless you know that ADPi has a NATIONALLY WRITTEN policy saying women cannot drink or smoke in letters, it would behoove you to preface your comments with "in my chapter." And if you find drinking or smoking "disrespectful" to yourself, you should not do them at all, regardless of whether you have letters on. (PS: Smoking is legal in the US for all those 18 and older, which covers 99% of college students.)

My guess is that the OP and her fellow alums don't want anything they do to come back on the collegiate chapter which is very considerate - which is why she specifically said she DOESN'T want anything with letters.

Is this a common thing? For just chapters to restrict drinking in letters? I thought that it was a nationally recognized policy of most sororities, and that is why chapters acknowledged it. But obviously I could be mistaken. I know that AST doesn't allow drinking in letters, but are there a lot of other organizations that restrict it on a national level?

And as for the shirt idea... use the colors of the sorority, and maybe have your motto on the front of the shirt, and on the back, have it read "Alumnae".

Whatever you do, just be conscious of the ages of the alumnae that will be attending, and ask yourself what kind of shirt you'd want to wear at that age. Something tasteful that doesn't make them look like they're back in college.

Or... why not email the alumnae and ask them for their opinions?

As I've said a million times before, it usually is not expressly written out like that - i.e. "don't drink in letters" - but it says something along the lines of the members shall comport themselves in a dignified manner. The only thing our national bylaws say is that you can't use the letters in conjunction w/ alcohol - i.e. you can't have ASA on the front of a t-shirt and sponsored by Coors Light on the back. The rest is up for interpretation.

Re your question - hell, some chapters don't allow you to smoke or drink (without wearing letters) unless you're sitting down.

She is an alumna herself.

Our guidelines read:

no Alpha Sigma Tau insignia or associated symbols of the Sorority shall appear at any activity or function in which the abuse of alcohol is the outstandingly noticeable function or at an establishment that is primarily for drinking alcohol.

And if she's an alumna, she obviously doesn't speak for all of them. She can still contact them and ask.

There are many GLV's (greek licensed vendors) that have appropriate shirts that do not have the letters on them. Our headquarters provided us with a list at our annual convention, so maybe check there to start.
