All Sororities Sisters...Please Read
Greetings my Greek Sisters,
I am a doctoral student at Loyola College in Maryland conducting my dissertation research on how spirituality and religiosity affect self esteem in women who have and have not been raped. Participation involves completing five surveys which should take about 10 minutes. All of the surveys are completely anonymous and you will never be asked for any identifying information such as your name, address, or telephone number. Please take 10 minutes to fill out my surveys and please forward this email to all the women you know. Thank you for your help. To access the surveys, please click on the link below. (If the link does not work, please copy and paste the link below onto your browser). https://www.psychdata.com/s.asp?SID=122311 Please email me if you have any questions at lakeitadcarter@yahoo.com thank you again for taking the time to participate in this research. Interesting survey! Good luck with the study! ;)

I'm not sure why I'm HAVING to explain this to a doctoral student, but you're NOT going to get accurate research by posting your survey on a messageboard. You'd like to think the human population is inherently good and out to help everyone else, but the truth is, you're going to end up with a bunch of garbage this way.

Don't AKA members (or women claiming to be AKA members) have to post in their forum to introduce themselves first?
|
I'm sitting here trying to imagine any doctoral committee or IRB [Institutional Review Board] approving methodology that would allow someone to contact potential participants through a message board for dissertation research. I know at the institution where I did my work, as well as my current institution that would be difficult to make fly.
But then again... who knows. I did click on the link and it looks up and up. Some important protocols that are missing from this original post are present. |
I don't doubt that she knows what she is doing but I did wonder if her committee told her this was a good contact point to target a group of (mostly, I assume) college educated people.
Unless otherwise specified, doctoral students tend to send these types of surveys to other doctoral students who send it to graduate students and people in their email listings. That's kind of a self-selection process in itself that has its limitations. But there are limitations that you will have to acknowledge in your data collection process whether you distribute it via message boards or email. The email distribution tends to be a safer route. |
It looks legitimate, at least as far as I can tell. From the post on our board, it also looks as though it was initially an email. Perhaps she is trying to broaden her data set.
I hope that she will introduce herself in the proper place in our forum. |
The survey is short and well designed.
Good luck, akatenacious. |
How do you say, "separation of church and state"?
|
I wonder why the survey offers no choice of "I don't believe in a god." - the underlying assumption is one has a religion and can measure its strength in her life now and then.
