The Letters for Bid Day Photos
The big wooden letters our sorority uses for photos on Bid Day are ruined. We've had them a while and no one can seem to remember how we got them. I went to Home Depot to see if they can cut letters, but they told us no and didn't know where to refer us to.
We bought the wood and will probably have one of our friends cut them for us, but we'd much rather have them done some place. They'll look much nicer... Do those of you who use the big wooden letters remember where you got them? In the meantime, I'm going to keep looking on google. (This is what I do in between patients at work: I google and read posts on GC :D) |
Does your campus have a carpentry shop? Although we didn't use the big letters, my APO chapter often took our wood to the carpenter and he would cut it into paddles or other shapes for us for free. (It's not like a campus carpenter usually has a lot on his plate, lol)

oh! Good idea! I'll check into that.
|
One of our sister's father's cut them for us. Then she painted them. I think they look great!
|
You can also try local high schools. Many of them have shop and this is one area they are trained in.

I am in the process of making some for my chapter
I drew the letters on large white paper, then onto the plywood The husband of a friend of mine does some wood working and he cut them out...Now I'm about halfway done painting them! :-) |
Try sending out an email to all your members for some handy Dads or brothers. We had a sister's grandpop cut them out for us.

We went back to Home Depot to get some plywood, but were told not to get plywood. I guess it's too easy to get splinters... who would have known? We got a different type of wood... but I have no idea what it's called but it's supposed to be splinter-free. I think we found someone with a jigsaw who is willing to cut them for us, too... |
My dad is really good with carpentry and did our chapters when our old one split. We had a K and a Delta interlocking. My dad took the old one and used it as a model for the new one. He made it out of a little better quality wood, so it will be around for years to come. Several of us then painted it. The cost of the wood isn't that much, and there's gotta be a dad or grandpa of someone in the chapter that's handy like that.

the cost of the wood was super cheap. (I think it was like $10.00 total).
I love the idea of the interlocking Kappa and Delta... |
Big Wooden Letters (oooh, that sounds dirty!)
My chapter had these kind of letters and they were great! I suggest making them ease to move. We'd set them up on the sidelines of games for our cheering section, use them for group pics, and decorate them crazily for spirit events. Painting them was a big project for our whole chapter and it was a (messy) but great way to bond.

I'm kinda at a standstill for getting my letters finished
I somehow lost a whole quart of red paint somewhere between my deck and inside my house!!! |
I actually saw Greek wooden letters at Jo Ann Fabrics, so try looking there or at other craft stores in your area.

Side note, I know that another of our chapters actually paints a set of their wooden letters often (semesterly?) to match recruitment themes, etc. They are always so cute. |

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ts01/001-1.jpg I used plywood....after you paint the primer on them, there's no way you could get splinters. |
