Why are your fingernails so long?

good question

To answer the original question, as a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha married to an AKA, I would say "it depends." Each org. has its own minimum GPA. Some chapters raised the standards higher than the national requirements (e.g. 3.0 vs 2.5). I believe AKA currently has a minimum of 2.5, but one of these fine ladies can address that more directly and accurately, I'm sure. As far as the nails...you have to decide for yourself why having long nails is a) appropriate, b) worthwhile, c) practical, d) something you are committed to (religious/personal reasons or just "fashion?"). It could have an impact on your "acceptance" ...if it came to that ...based on first impression, but who knows? Personally, just as a GUY, that's usually a turn-off, but I like things simple. Also, if it's just the nails, I doubt you would be seen as "too ghetto." If there are other things (hair, manner of speech, style of dress, etc.) that go along with it, that's a whole different thing entirely. |

1. Please read the Pearls of Wisdom. 2. Whatever GPA is requested is exactly what you need. 3. Fingernails? Is that the biggest concern you have? |

MDS,
Just get your GPA as high as you can. I am happy to hear that you have at least a 3.0. Keep it up. You will also need a very good GPA for career opps and for grad school if you desire such. As with anything else in the world, membership is competitive. Bring your best self. Very long nails might detract attention away from what you want members to focus on. Do you want to be remembered as the woman with the really long nails or as the woman with the 3.x GPA? Ok, I'll be real. To be safe, if they are fake, soak them off. If they are not fake, I guess you have to keep them. Perhaps a nice single, neutral tone with no designs or rhinestones. It seems a little extreme to cut real nails that have grown that long. The most important thing is to have a pristine and competitive package on every front and be professional (in demeanor, attire, etc.). SC Quote:

She didn't say she has a 3.0. She also didn't say she was even in college.
She could be an inmate with internet access and an addiction to ellipses, ya know. |
Why do people insist on posting membership questions when there are so many posts saying DON'T do it?!

I have long nails and I am a Delta. Guess they didn't judge me. I guess that she could cut them? Whay am I trying to rationalize this? |

Thanks and good day. |
DSTChaos,
I guess she could be. That I answered her question would still be ok with me, however. I'm sure that there are many, many woman out there reading this thread who are glad that I did answer her question who actually do have a 3.0. Granted, they might not have the long fingernails but hey, they might be an analogous situation. :) It's ok with me either way. SC Quote:

Because they love Alpha Kappa Alpha and don't always follow the rules in life. :) And I was wrong for answering, huh? Bad SC!
