Kick Boxing

I was posting in the exercise thread, and I was just posting that I run in the morning before I go in to work (class when school is in session) and about kick boxing. I was told that kick boxing is a great way to stay in shape. I looked into it, and if I sign up for 3 years it's $75.00 per month. I haven't been to any of the fitness clubs, so I'm not sure if working out there is similar in cost. Anyway, I was just wondering has anyone ever tried kick boxing before? Did/do you like it, and is it really a great way to stay in shape?

I say try your kick boxing class to see how much of a work out you get. Not all kick boxing classes are created equal. It depends on the instructor and the various techniques. My best kick boxing workouts have come in the form of actual boxing classes where we include kick boxing cardio and boxing-toning moves to shape the arms, legs, and abs.

I do kick boxing and power sculpting classes with my gym for free. I like the power sculpting more because it incorporates kick boxing, cardio moves and weight lifting. I love lifting weights and other toning and muscle building exercises like squats and walking lunges.

As an aside:
The only classes that I pay for are yoga classes. My gym offers them for free but I go to a studio where I get small classes and personalized attention. You get to know everyone because you see them 2-3 times a week depending on how much $$$ you spend. AWESOME workout and a great yoga community where we do things like vegetarian potluck dinners and weekend getaways. End yoga rant. I get excited. :p Namaste.

Yeah, I've heard that some gyms offer kick boxing and other ways to stay in shape for free. One of my classmates was telling me to do it that way instead. She said it doesn't cost as much. I've been running for years and it works great for me, but I just wanted to try something different along with it. I spoke with the instructor and she said that I can make my own schedule. They meet 3 nights a week for one hour a day. Is this similar to other kick boxing sessions you've had? I haven't gotten my class schedule from school yet, so I don't know which days I'll be going, but 3 days a week for an hour a day isn't too bad. Yeah, I didn't think about that. I guess it would depend on the instructor though. What she told me sounds good. She said the owner is opening up one in another state too. That tells me that they must be pretty good. I think what I'm going to do is try the kick boxing only rather than the fitness club, because if I like it, I'll stay focused on just that. Thanks DSTCHAOS for the advice. I'll try it and see if I like it.:)

My gym has a monthly calendar with kickboxing everyday. But if you like a particular instructor, that person's class is typically 1-2 a week.

What do you mean by 1-2 a week? That's it?

They have a rotation of instructors and they switch the rotation up each month.

For August's calendar they are only doing kickboxing three days a week because they've added new gym classes. Two are regular kickboxing and the third is turbokick which is much more intense. Three different instructors. So if you have a favorite instructor and only want that person, you would come in once a week. If you don't care which instructor you get, you can kickbox three times a week if you want.

Oh, okay I get it now. lol I thought you meant two people per class. I've actually heard of some instructors who have private sessions with only 1 or 2 students though. I'd rather be with a full class. I don't think I would mind more than one instructor though. I'm just doing it as a another way of keeping in shape.

You take sculpting classes too? You're involved in a lot. You should try pottery. I took a pottery class as an elective when I was in highschool. It was messy, but I really enjoyed it.

My gym offers both kickboxing and group kick. Due to an injury, I can't kickbox. Group Kick involves no contact and gives a great workout. http://www.quantumfitness.ca/programs/kick.asp The cost for all classes (including yoga, Group Power, Group Step, Spinning...) and the use of regular gym equipment is $60 a month.

I do Body Combat, which is a martial arts fusion class set to music. It is rather similar to kickboxing- but incorporates even more martial arts elements. It is my favorite Les Mills group fitness class- as well as my favorite kind of exercise overall.

What's up with Yoga? I've been seeing that a lot lately. That's just for stretching, right?

Actually no. There are elements for strength, balance, and even relaxation.

Yeah and they still do infomercial thingies.

However, I think most people have realized that it wasn't that much different than forms of kick boxing and boxing.

I got a kick out of people who did it and thought they were learning a 'new' martial art....LOL
