The quest for 71
Will Barry Bonds break Mark McGwire's record of seventy home runs in a season?
|
Good afternoon to the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma. I got this from another discussion board, but it speaks to what some think about Barry Bonds' quest for the home-run record:
"I will use an SAT-style analogy to concisely theorize why the disproportionately Caucasian sports media is telling us that the American public is not "drawn" to Bonds's HR chase the way they were to Sosa's (or why Sammy may get more attention now that he only trails Barry 55-51): Sosa: Bonds: Bill Cosby: Ice Cube. That's right, the analogy of the good black and the bad black. Sammy smiles, like Cos. Barry scowls, like Cube. Bonds probably will get the record, barring injury. |
With one week left in the regular season, Barry Bonds has 69 homeruns. I think the question at this point is will he break the record against the Houston Astros or the Los Angeles Dodgers?
I don't care when Barry breaks the record as long as the Astros win their next six games and clinch the N.L. Central Divison title. GO 'STROS!!! |
I was reading a fascinating piece about Bonds and his going for the record. Much of it, of course, was devoted to his personality. In fact, one guy point-blank said that "people have a hard time with African-American athletes with a personality that's not particularly inviting."
Personally, I hope he gets it. It reminds me of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and being on the moon. History will remember Bonds and McG. |
Congrats to Barry Bonds for having such a fantastic season. Barry set many records, including hitting 73 homeruns this season.
Did I mention that the Houston Astros won the N.L. Central? :D |
