Midwest U's Retro Rush Thread

I currently have some time on my hands and have enjoyed reading everyone’s rush stories so I thought I would post my own. I attended a school where greek life was a very big deal, although I did not know this walking onto campus as a freshman. I remember receiving the rush pamphlet over the summer and completely dismissing it. But let me explain why… I am a military brat but my family is from the south. I was pushed into debutant and felt sorority was just something else my family was pushing me into. I am a legacy to one group that is at my school (in the Midwest); although I was under no pressure to join them, I was under a lot of pressure to join a chapter. I was told I needed to associate myself with the right kind of girls. Looking back I should have listened to my grandmother and rushed my freshman year. However, I did not.

My freshman year I made a lot of friends on my dorm floor including a few nice and amazing sorority women. Then I met my boyfriend who went to nearby State U. I soon started spending all my time at Midwest State U and lost touch with my new friends. In February, new boyfriend and I broke up, leaving me heartbroken at Midwest U with no friends. I spent the rest of the school year hanging out with three guys who went to my high school. When I returned home in May after finals, my parents told me that in the fall I needed to rush, join a house and make new friends. At this point I had seen all the fun the girls on my hall were having and I REALLY wanted to join a sorority. Looking back I should have done spring rush, I just didn’t know that was an option. I was completely clueless about greek life.

August comes around and after spending the summer searching for the perfect rush clothes and securing my recommendations I was ready to move back to Midwest U. At my school there are 11 houses.

Gilmore Girls
Two and a Half Men
Lost
Greek
The Hills
Date My Mom
Big Brother
7th Heaven
Hannah Montana
Life with Derek
Numb3rs

Background on me: I graduated top 5% of my high school, I graduated with 400. Good ACT scores and had a 3.5 my freshman year. I was involved on campus; I was on the campus activities board, pre-law club and a few other clubs.

Day 1:

Gilmore Girls- These girls are so pretty! I had the best conversation with the girl who picked me up. She was a senior and also in the pre-law club. We talked for the longest time and when she got bumped she gave me a hug, which made me feel really special. I really wanted an invite back here.

Two and a Half Men- One of the girls from my dorm was a Two and a Half Men. Although I didn’t hang out with her very much she was very nice and smiled at me when she saw me on round one. Their rush room was very open. I remember having an awkward conversation with the first girl I spoke to. The second girl I talked to I clicked with immediately. So I had a good impression of this house.

Lost- This group tried to COB me the beginning of my freshman year. As you know the story, I became too busy with new boyfriend and never really took interest. This house was on the lower tier but they had a lot of cute girls. And had remodeled their house over the summer. I remember I liked them a lot better now that I did my freshman year. However, they were not high on my list. I honestly don’t really remember anyone from round one.

Greek- I really wanted to be a Greek! I knew some girls on my dorm floor who were Greek and I loved them. The girl who picked me up told me she knew the coolest spot in the room and lets go there before someone else took it. Yes I actually believed this! I didn’t know that was the predetermined spot she and her bump group had chosen! Haha! This group was not necessarily the top house on campus but I thought they were amazing. I don’t remember what we talked about but I do remember my rusher had a great personality and made me feel completely at home at this chapter.

The Hills- A girl from my high school joined this house in the spring. I was also considering this house. I had the best conversation there. Although I was talking to three girls at one point, which I now know is a no no. I was on fire! I had all the right questions and these girls had the right answers! I really wanted an invite back.

Date my Mom- Although this was a top house I felt so out of place! I felt completely bombarded and it seemed like no one wanted to talk to me or get to know me. They had a really good reputation; I just didn’t feel at home here.

Big Brother- These girls are very friendly and had the most creative songs. These girls had lemon in their water. Why I remember this I have no idea. Although they were not my first choice, I knew rushing as a sophomore was difficult at my school and I might end up here.

7th Heaven- This was my legacy group. However, I did not write that on my rush application or have my grandmother fill out a form for me. I did not want to be a 7th Heaven. Looking back I was such a brat. I did not give them a chance at all because they were a struggling chapter. This house double rushed and I remember feeling more than uneasy about this house.

Hannah Montana- I also loved this house. Although they were the stereotypical perfect blonde sorority, a girl on my hall was a Hannah and she was amazing. This girl was that girl that was nice to every single person she came into contact with. The whole time I knew here I never once heard her say a negative thing. This made me want to be a Hannah even more. The girl I talked to was very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in wanting to know me. She asked me a lot of questions about my self and made me feel very comfortable. I left this house with a great feeling.

Life with Derek- My suitemate from the dorms is in this house. We did not get along very well. However, a friend from my hall was in this house and I very high opinion of them. I was picked up by a girl who I had met at the mall the day before! I thought I was headed for a good start despite the fact of suitemate. I didn’t think she could hurt me because she was not well liked in Life with Derek. No one wanted to live with her and she was always complaining about it to her boyfriend. I had such a good time at this house. Hall mate came over to me and told the girl I was talking to that I was the most hilarious girl she knows and gave me a huge hug. I left this house sure I would receive and invite back. This house was known for taking a larger number of sophomores compared to the other houses. I left thinking this could be the house I end up at.

Numb3rs- A girl a year ahead of me in high school was in this house. Although I was not close to her I had a class with her my junior year of high school. I was so excited when she picked me up at the door! I hadn’t seen her in 2 years. I talked to her the whole time, no bumping at this house. I was so excited about this house. They were a top house and I didn’t really think I had a chance being a sophomore. I left this house with Numb3ers being my top choice of the day. These girls seemed so put together and classy, and I wanted to be one of them.

End of day one choices Numb3rs, Greek, Hannah Montana, Gilmore Girls, Two and a half men, The Hills, Life with Derek,

Date my Mom

Lost

Big Brother

7th Heaven

Can you do COB at your school at the beginning of the freshman year?
(love the Midwestern school recruitment though)

Lost tried to recruit me after formal had ended my freshman year. I didn't participate in formal recruitment my freshman year, my rush story is my sophomore year. I probably should have mentioned that my school does recruitment in the fall before school starts.

Gotta love the Midwest! Can't wait to hear more of your story as my dd is a Theta at a University of Midwest! Is heading back that way this weekend, too!

At my midwestern school you could. We had fall recruitment and a few groups would COB after formal was over to fill their pledge classes.

LOVING It!

Are we allowed to know if this occurred in the 80's, 90's or 2000's?

ETA: I am guessing it is fairly recent, but I don't want to assume anything...
