UA out of stater ADVICE PLEASE!!!

I wasn't very nervous about rush until I started to read up on it more. I'm from out of state and I'm going to the University of Arizona and rushing in about 3 weeks. I had no idea that recs were so important until just a couple days ago and so I've basically asked everyone I can think of but only a few of them ended up pledging in sororities. I'm going into this with a totally open mind as far as which sorority I would fit into, but I have a friend who goes there and he recommended five of them that he thought I'd fit in with but I don't have any recs for any of them. Being from out of state and knowing no one I guess kind of works to my disadvantage and now without recs I feel like I'm likely to get cut early on. Any advice??????

I found this thread about UA recruitment that could be of some help and gives some insight into how important recs actually are:

The best thing for you to do is to be as open-minded as possible to all of the sororities you will meet during recruitment. Don't go in only focusing on "the 5 my friend said I'd fit into." Also, since recs are suggested by alot of the people in the thread I posted, you might be facing some cuts early on if you don't have them (especially if alot of other girls do).

Depending on where you live, there may be an Alumnae Panhellenic chapter in your home town. You could check NPC's web site for it and contact them to be sure you have sponsor forms for all the groups. Also, friends of your parents are the best pplace to look - not your friends. If they know someone who is active in her sorority, that woman probably knows women in the other groups too. I am very active in mine and know people in just about every other NPC group so I often help girls get their forms for all of them at any particular school.

I'd honestly call U of A greek life and find out just how important recs are. Rush here in AZ isn't like Rush in the south (i.e. cutthroat). U of A does have a lot of girls going through rush (to the point where they actually wanted my chapter to come back on campus last year, but we couldn't, we will be recolonizing this fall) and placing in houses.

As someone previously mentioned, keep and open mind. Also, don't listen to tent talk. You wouldn't believe the gossip that goes on down there. It is insane! I was only down there for one semester and went down for recruitments and homecomings (to visit the chapter) and the gossip amongst sororities about other sororities was crazy. And that was the thing, it was just gossip, but it was like taken to a whole new level.

You have to make a decision based on what is right for you. Which house you feel the best in. Don't make your decision, because it is 4 years of college and for life afterwords, on which house has "the best socials" or is "the most popular" or the "prettiest" or drop houses because they are "social outcasts" or the "nerds". At 29 it is very easy for me to say, don't worry about what other people think of you and follow your heart, but it is very different for 18 years olds.

If you have any questions and you don't feel comfortable posting them online, please PM me and I will try my best to answer them!

Good Luck!
