Africa Bags

Just got my The Crescent magazine, and wanted to share the great work a sister is doing. Holly Petitt and her husband were so moved by the terrible conditions in Malawi, Africa that they came up with the idea to have the villagers make cloth bags to be sold in America, thus reducing waste and giving the villagers a way to support themselves. Check out www.africabags.org for the story and to buy those bags!. I'm going to order some!

eta - and Delta Sigma Thetas, check out the hand-carved elephants.

My question of course is....how much of the profits are they getting back on this?

Anybody can be moved by terrible conditions and put folks to work....but I am curious to know if these folks are going to be failed compensated for their work?

Sorry to throw this out there but I get concerned when I read stuff like this.

According to the website:

--Purchase an Africa Bags product. 100% of all profit will be given back to the citizens of Malawi!

--Send a donation. You can tell us exactly how you would like the money spent!

CLICK ON THE WEBSITE and I'm sure all your questions will be answered, including transparent financial accounting and tax-exempt status .

Since production started in July, $12,000 has been earned by the workers. Africa Bags recently finished construction on a community center in Kamweko.

The project is relatively new, but it looks to me like they have everything in place to be a very positive form of outreach. Any particular reason you have to doubt that this program is anything other than what it purports to be?
