Dress opinion...

Which would be best?-- This paired with a nice light cardigan/pearls and ballet flats be alright for pref night:

versus this in a different print?:

Is the second dress appropriate for a rush occasion or too much? It's got the intricate beading along the band at the collar and beneath the chest. I haven't seen many other girls in a Lilly dress of that style, but I just got it and love it a lot.

Thanks!

I like the second one. The first one would be nice if it were a little longer--I immediately went "Yikes!" when I saw how short it was on the model.

haha. it does look short on the model, however, on me, it is knee length, so that should be conservative enough i think :)

Oh, okay. Knee length is def conservative enough!

thank you! :) do you think lilly dresses are too ostentatious? or is it not even obvious that they're lilly pulitzer?

sarahsmilehawk 07-21-2008 02:04 AM

The second one is obviously Lily. I hear Lily is popular and totally appropriate in the south. I go to a Big 12 school and either of those dresses would be fine, though maybe not dressy enough for pref. More like 2nd invitationals.

Xidelt 07-21-2008 03:25 AM

your college panhellenic website should have pics of what they suggest you wear to each round. maybe a conservative cocktail dress?

kddani 07-21-2008 06:36 AM

the second could be rather warm.

And, honestly, its hard to say without seeing you actually in the dress. You might not have the body to pull off the first. We don't know.

It's really not best to rely on strangers on the internet to make these decisions for you

I don't think either style is appropriate for Preference. Think classic, conservative, and dressy but not formal. Also, if you are going through at Vandy, remember that preference is in January and not August.

FSUZeta 07-21-2008 07:17 AM

there are younger looking lily dresses that you could go with, but for one of the first rounds of recruitment, not for prefs. frankly, that looks like something your mom would be wearing.

there is another "what to wear for prefs" thread posted yesterday or the day before and vandalsquirrel posted some wonderful examples of appropriate pref. dresses. check it out.

That first one looks really whory on the model but then again I think she's trying to slut it up. The prob w/ planning on wearing a cardi is it might be REALLY hot in the room and if you take it off the dress might look inappropriate.

I like the Lily but as others have said, you might bake in it.

They both look like nice dresses, depending on how they actually fit you (length, etc.) but I agree that pref should be a bit more dressy without being too formal. I'd wear either (or both) dresses earlier in the process.

On a similar note ... for those who have been on the other side, do you really remember what dress the pnm wore to your pref parties? I'm not talking about the odd-ball memorable ones but the everyday classic dresses that the majority wore. I went through rush 15 years ago or so and really can't remember what I wore, let alone what someone else wore.

I like the first one simply because it can be dressed down or dressed up. Also since you said that you are going through in the Fall at Vandy you probably wont even have a preference night because it is informal recruitment.

Regarding "beading": please double-check with what your school's Panhellenic suggests. I've seen many, many statements on sites flatly saying NO BEADING, NO SEQUINS. That's not my personal suggestions -- it's what a lot of SEC and Texas schools, especially, say.

Best wishes.

I do, but only because we (those rushing from my dorm floor) took a group picture before we left.

I couldn't tell you what any of rushees were wearing when I was preffing them. As far as clothes go, I always figured if you were dressed appropriately, then the clothes are no longer important and the focus is on your personality. If do something crazy- like wearing hose with sequins up the back, then you are remembered more for the clothes.
