Question about work hours...
I know the average work hours in an office is 8 or 9 to 5. How early does the doors open? 7 am? 6 am? Later? Can an employee have the option of using a key or something if they want to get to work a few hours early?
|
Depends on the building. My hours reverted back to 8 to 4:30, but the building is open to workers at 6 am until midnight. Check with the supervisor.

I work for an insurance company, and you have to swipe in with your ID badge to get into the employee parking lot, and to get into the building, and you can do that 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The general working hours for a lot of the claims people are 8a-5p, but the people in my office (the law office) are generally here at all hours all days.

I work for a very small company and whoever is the first one in unlocks the door (we each have a key). The hours are somewhat flexible - as long as you get 8 hours of work in, they don't care if you come in at 7:30 or 9:00. Generally, most work 8-5 with an hour for lunch. |
At my previous job, the building was only open from 6am - 9pm. No one could get in before or after. Outside of upper management, there was really no way our jobs could be performed outside of regular business hours (this was in customer service).

Our elevators stop working after a certain time every evening but I have a badge that allows access to all the floors my company has after-hours. I also have to use my badge to turn on all the lights and the air conditioning on my floor since that gets shut down in the evening as well.

Our official office hours are 8:30-5:30, but we have flex time so people can get here earlier or a little later to acommodate commutes. We have key cards to get in the building during off hours.

I wish we had key cards. I teach, and our buildings open usually around 7 am. Custodial staff is there until about midnight or 1 am. A few times I've needed to get back in the building after work hours and had to bang on a door to get a custodian to let me in.

I work in outside sales and have a home office, so I tend to work all hours of the day and night! LOL I will say, having flexibility has been great, as I occasionally have a school event for my son during the day and I don't technically have to take time off to attend. I also spend countless hours in my car, driving to see clients.
I have been in outside sales for over 15 years and would not have it any other way! |
The campus where I work is very large, so every entrance has a badge reader that we just need to hold our badges next to for access to pass the gates & then into each door for any building. You can come & go 24/7.
|
We have a card reader at the front enterance. You need to swipe it before 7:30 AM and after 5:30 - anytime in between, the doors are open.
A workday is 7.5 hours, not including lunch. You are considered full-time at 30 hours. That said, we have what are called core hours - 9 AM to 3 PM. Your schedule, however it is (and yes, you can be flexible with it however you want) must include those hours. Lunch, usually 30 minutes or an hour, depending on how your 7.5 hour workday is going, must be taken between 11:30 - 1:30. |
We originate television programs and cable networks.
We're open and operating 24/7. We all have proximity cards which allow us into different parts of the building. |
Health care system corporate offices. You can technically get into the building anytime but after 8 pm and before 6 am, you have to buzz for security to let you in and you have to sign in at the security desk. On weekends, the doors are open during the day but again, you have to sign in (and ask them to turn the lights on for your floor)

I work for a tech company. We have a NOC (network operations center) that is staffed 24/7, so employees can be here whenever they want (or need to be). We have a hand-scanner and proxi reader at the front door and various levels of access to the rest of the building, but your access doesn't change based on time of day.
My usual work hours are 8-5, but I can come in early to get work done if I have to be gone during the normal work day so I don't have to take PTO time. As long as the work gets done, it's pretty flexible. |
All times are GMT -4. The time now is 11:24 PM. |
